대웅전 앞에 동서로 쌍탑을 건립하는 것은 불경에 이른바 다보여래와 석가여래가 동서로 병좌하여 석가여래가 설법하고 다보여래가 증명한다는 데서 온 것이다. 이 두 탑은 석조이면서도 마치 목조인 듯 자유자재로 구사한 조각기법의 정교함은 동서양에서 그 유례를 찾아볼 수 없을 만큼 우수하다. 특히 석가탑에서는 1966년 이 탑을 보수할 때 세계에서 가장 오래된 목판인쇄의 다라니경문이 발견되었다.

The Seokgayeorae preaches and the Daboyeorae verifies what the Seokgayeorae preached. The free use of elaborate carving technique over the two pagodas, as if the material were wood instead of stone, is unparallel in the world. The block book of the Dharani Sutra is the oldest one in the world. It was found in the Seokgatap when it was repaired in 1966.
