북촌 한옥마을은 가회동 일대에 옛날 기와집이 520호나 몰려있는 곳인데, 모두 조선조의 양반들이나 사대부들의 집이었다. 그중 가장 오래된 것은 160여 년 전에 건축된 것이다. 목재는 모두 압록강에서 뗏목으로 날라온 수장목을 사용하였기 때문에 서까래, 대들보, 마루, 문틀 등이 아직도 갈라지지 않고 견딘다.

Bukchon Hanok village (village of Korean traditional style houses): 520 Giwajibs (Korean tile roofed houses) are gathered around Gahwe-dong. Originally all the Giwajibs were owned by the gentry or high officials of Joseon dynasty. The oldest house was built about 160 years ago. All of the lumbers for the houses were brought down from the Amnokgang River by raft. The rafters, the cross beams, wooden floors and door frames are made of dressing timber and retain their original shape and color.

北村韓屋村は嘉会洞の一帯に昔の瓦家が520軒も集まっている所である。これは全部朝鮮時代の両班（上流階級）とか士大夫（官僚層）らの家であった。その中で一番古いのは160余年前に建築されたものである。すべての木材は鴨緑江から筏流しの修粧木を使ったので、垂木、梁、廊下、門などは今だにもひび割れなくて丈夫である。

北村韩屋村在家会洞一带，有520号左右的瓦房，体现了朝鲜朝的老百姓们和士大夫们的房屋。那其中最悠久的是160年前建，造的，因为木材全部取材于鸭绿江的修桩木，所以掾木，木梁，地板，门缝等至今仍未磨损。
